The Centre for Health Protection (GZB) of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) is active in several (inter)national projects on the topics of (developmental)neurotoxicity and cardiotoxicity. For this purpose, human embryonic stem cells are used, differentiated to cardiomyocytes or neuronal cultures. In collaboration with other departments, it has been demonstrated that also induced pluripotent stem cells provide a promising approach with the advantage of being able to generate individual, patient-derived, cell models. Therewith, GZB contributes to the development of personalized toxicology and personalized medicine.

For both neuronal cultures and cardiomyocytes electrical activity provides a highly valuable functional parameter. The lack of reliable and efficient techniques with a decent level of throughput for the detection of electrical activity in in vitro systems, is often the reason why functional characterization is omitted.
