The Centre for Health Protection (GZB) of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) is active in several (inter)national projects on the topics of (developmental)neurotoxicity and cardiotoxicity. For this purpose, human embryonic stem cells are used, differentiated to cardiomyocytes or neuronal cultures. Pivotal in the development of new stem cell-based models is characterization, and functional characterization in particular. For both neuronal cultures and cardiomyocytes electrical activity provides a highly valuable functional parameter. Using a micro-electrode array recorder, with incorporated control of culture conditions (CO2 and temperature) high-throughput (48-96 wells) recordings of electrical activity will be feasible. This will add an array of possibilities in terms of data generation and significance to the scientific output of the department.
