A fluorescence microscopy system must be supplied and installed that is capable for performing confocal fluorescence microscopy, as well as conventional light microscopy on a wide variety of samples, zebrafish, live cells, plant tissue, and bacterial samples. The microscope must be able to perform live cell confocal imaging, particularly of photo-sensitive cells. It must also be able to perform workflows that consist of both confocal Abbe-diffraction limited resolution experiments, as well as time lapse imaging over 24-hour periods and longer at controlled temperatures. It also should have a mounting option for vertical examination of natural gravitropic plant growth. This microscope will be used by both experienced and novice users who both should be able to operate the machine after training by an expert user. We estimate that the microscope will be used for approximately 40 hours per week and should withstand this amount of usage for a period of at least 10 years. The microscope must have a state-of-the-art reliability and must be compatible with Dutch work environment safety regulations.
