An IRMS is the high accuracy workhorse of every stable isotope laboratory, especially when a laboratory wants to be a player in high precision work, such as the isotopes of atmospheric CO2. Also, for the maintenance and upgrade of international isotopes scales such an instrument is indispensable. The instrument can be used for stable isotopes of all the light elements H, C, N, O and S. The capability of H and O isotope analysis will be put to use in the development of a new research line that connects isotope sensitivity to the detailed processes inside fuels cells and during electrolysis (ESRIG and ENTEG). In addition to in-house research, the IRMS will be also used for collaboration with, and providing services to, third parties in the Netherlands and elsewhere.
