EBN has been tasked by EZK to map the subsurface in areas where there is sparse existing seismic data coverage, in order to better understand the potential for deep geothermal energy and accelerate development of geothermal energy. The scope of the tendering procedure consists of acquisition of seismic data onshore in one specified location as a test phase for a regional scale seismic acquisition programme, which is foreseen to take place in 2019 and onwards.

Versnelde procedure:

Earlier this year EZK has, unexpectedly, decided to accelerate the reduction of winning of natural gas in the so called Groningenveld and to stop production in whole in 2030. Deep geothermal energy is considered one of the possible alternatives for heating with natural gas. EZK wants to accelerate the development of geothermal energy and expects the first results from EBN on short notice.

This complex tendering procedure is not only under time pressure due the expectation of EZK, but also because of the expected breeding season. To shoot the test lines before March 2019 (expected start of breeding season), it is necessary to start with the seismic field activities not later than mid-January 2019. This only will be possible if the accelerated procedure is followed on basis of article 2.74 of the Dutch Public Procurement Act.
