Last year, TenneT investigated the possibilities of installing a 3,4 km-long section of superconducting cable in the city of Enschede. Although a possible scenario with costs exceeding those of a standard (110 kV) grid investment had in fact been considered, the actual costs for this type of system are higher than expected.
At this point, installing a superconducting cable of only a few kilometres in length would be too costly. Therefor this tender is stopped. However, the associated technology is developing rapidly. This type of cable is expected to become more affordable in the future. When that time comes, TenneT will definitely reconsider the option of using superconductivity in the context of a different project.
