The Dutch academic medical centres Erasmus University Medical Center Rotterdam and Leiden University Medical Center have joined forces with Delft University of Technology to realize the first treatment centre for proton therapy in The Netherlands: Holland Particle Therapy Centre (HollandPTC), to be operational in 2016/2017. About 600 cancer patients will be treated annually at HollandPTC.
This tender concerns the supply of proton therapy equipment, including the maintenance and service of this equipment and an R&D cooperation.

After a European tendering procedure Varian Medical Systems Netherlands has been selected by HollandPTC to deliver the radiation equipment for the new centre for proton therapy in Delft. HollandPTC, the joint venture between Erasmus MC, TU Delft and LUMC, is on track to be able to treat cancer patients as planned. Varian will not only deliver and install, but also maintain the equipment the coming years. In addition, the company will participate in a joint research programme in order to develop a better and more cost-effective proton therapy. Varian will install the ProBeam® system. Two multifunctional treatment rooms will be realized where patients can be irradiated from different angles. A third treatment room is specifically designed for treatment of eye tumors. Indications for proton therapy are standard for eye tumors and LUMC is already known as the national centre of expertise for its treatment thereof. There will also be an advanced research area in HollandPTC to research and to facilitate the academic medical centres. Varian is a pioneer in the field of radiotherapy equipment and is currently involved with the construction of proton centres in the United States, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Taiwan. Particularly in terms of the precision radiation of tumor tissue, point by point with sharp bundle protons ("pencil-beam scanning") Varian is the leading company. This technique is essential to fully profit from the fundamental benefits of proton therapy. The selection of Varian Medical Systems is an important step in the realization of HollandPTC. The design of the centre has already been presented and the European investment bank (EIB) announced a loan of 90 million EUR will be made available to HollandPTC. The construction partners will be selected shortly. HollandPTC will be able to treat the first patients in 2017, under the condition that health insurance companies will make a timely decision to contract the centre. The capacity of the centre will increase in stages to a capacity of 600 patients per year. The Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport previously has indicated that proton therapy for up to 2,200 Dutch patients per year will be considered insured care. The treatment will go hand in hand with scientific research.
