201401033.051.001 โ€” Agricultural entrepreneurship incubator in Nairobi, Kenya

Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands Nairobi, Kenya

As part of its Trade and Development agenda, the Netherlands Embassy in Kenya has been operating an agriculture and food security programme since 2012. The EKN in Nairobi undertook to develop an innovative project to unlock the potential of farms owned by absentee landowners. The objective of this activity is to improve the agri-business climate by fostering profitable agri- business models. This will contribute to food security by increasing commercial food production in Kenya, and increase agricultural land use productivity. The aim in this area is to invest in the missing middle between semi- subsistence farmers โ€“ who are loath or unable to invest in the adoption of new technologies โ€“ and large scale plantations, often owned or managed by foreigners. The aim of the project is to establish an Agricultural Entrepreneurship Incubator to provide business development services and technical advice to agri-enterprises that bring together farm-operators and absentee landowners (telephone farmers). This is an innovative project that will work with non-traditional agricultural business models able to contribute to food security and deepen the market for Dutch agri-business knowledge and expertise.
