The supply and maintenance of a real time digital simulator for electric power system studies

European Commission, Joint Research Centre, Institute for Energy and Transport

The IET intends to build up advanced competences in the field of simulating the dynamic behaviour of smart grid electric power systems, primarily in view of reliability and power quality aspects. This includes modelling of short-term transients, occurring in the µs- to ms-range (as in the case of switching devices) and in the ms- to few seconds-range (as in the case of generator dynamics) as well as longer term events. The IET already disposes of offline (software) simulation tools to assess the dynamic behaviour of electric power systems. In addition to this and in order to gain better insight into system operation as well as greater depth of analysis, the IET is now intending to purchase a real time (hardware and software) digital simulator for electric power system studies, including warranty and maintenance services. In 2010 a first real time simulation was acquired which is used for similar purpose. The system is already in use mainly for grid simulations in Petten. For the activities in Ispra a second complementary real time simulation is needed, which will be mainly used for interoperability purpose. It is not possible to use the Petten system in Ispra because of the communication delay caused by the huge distance between Petten and Ispra. The JRC-IET thus seeks to purchase a real time digital simulator for electric power system studies and services related thereto for its activities in Ispra.
