The realisation of a wood chip fired “heat-only” boilers for Stadsverwarming Purmerend B.V., the Netherlands

Stadsverwarming Purmerend (SVP BV) is the district heating company of Purmerend, Netherlands, supplying heat to 25 000 connections, serving approximately 60 000 inhabitants of the city.
SVP BV has the intention to transfer the heat supply to the grid from the current fossil fuel based heat sources to sustainable heat sources in the coming 2,5 years. These sustainable sources will be a geothermal power plant and a wood chip fired “heat only” boiler. Due to the uncertainty regarding the heat output of the geothermal power station, currently SVP cannot definitively determine the required capacity of the wood chip fired “heat only” boiler. For this reason, SVP developed a number of scenarios regarding this capacity of the wood chip fired “heat only” boiler.
These are:
1. Total output Capacity to grid: 26 MWth – 44 MWth
Capacity arrangement: 2 x 13 MWth and optional 2 x 9 MWth.
Efficiency of conversion: >99 %, based on LHV.
Main emission requirements (@ 6 % O2):
Dust: <5 mg/Nm3.
NOx: <100 mg/Nm3.
SO2: <200 mg/Nm3.
Or.
2. Total output Capacity to grid: 44 MWth
Capacity arrangement: 4 x 11 MWth.
Efficiency of conversion: >99 %, based on LHV.
Main emission requirements (@ 6 % O2):
Dust: <5 mg/Nm3.
NOx: <100 mg/Nm3.
SO2: <200 mg/Nm3.
Total output is defined as the output of the boiler + the heat recovered by flue gas condensation.
