Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is located in a polder featuring abundant water, grass meadows and fertile farmland. The capital's city park "het Amsterdamse Bos", the coast and sand dunes are also located nearby, as are the Westeinder and Vinkeveense lakes. All these factors make AAS an appealing location for birds. However, birds can pose a serious safety risk to aircrafts. In order to optimize aviation safety as far as possible, AAS has taken several measures to keep birds at a safe distance from aircrafts. In addition to these measures AAS is investigating the possibilities of implementing a Bird Detection System (BDS) into its operation. Part of this investigation is issuing a Request for Information.
